Back in June, we shared tips for beating the San Antonio summer heat. Now that October is here, the AC finally gets a break, and your apartment can too. Fall is the perfect time for a seasonal reset, and a few simple changes can keep your home comfortable and your energy bill in check. Here's your fall checklist from all of us at Summer Creek.
1. Rethink Your Thermostat
October weather in San Antonio swings back and forth, with warm afternoons, cool mornings, and the occasional cold front. Your thermostat settings should follow the weather.
CPS Energy recommends setting your thermostat between 78° and 80° when cooling and between 68° and 70° when heating. On mild days, you may not need either one. Open your blinds in the morning to let the sun warm your apartment naturally, and close them at night to hold the heat in.
2. Let the Fresh Air In
This is the month to take advantage of San Antonio's best weather. On cool mornings and evenings, turn off the AC and open your windows to air out your apartment. It costs nothing and makes your home feel refreshed after months of being closed up.
3. Flip Your Ceiling Fan Switch
Most ceiling fans have a small switch on the motor housing that changes the direction of the blades. In summer, fans should spin counterclockwise to push cool air down. When it gets cold enough to turn on the heat, CPS Energy suggests running ceiling fans in reverse at the lowest setting to circulate the warm air trapped near the ceiling.
4. Check Your Air Filter
CPS Energy recommends having your HVAC system checked at least twice a year, in the spring and the fall. After a long summer of heavy AC use, your air filter has probably done a lot of work. If it looks dusty or it's been a while since it was changed, submit a maintenance request through the resident portal, and our team can take care of it.
5. Watch for Phantom Energy
With the holiday season approaching, it's a good time to get in the habit of turning off electronics and unplugging chargers you aren't using. Small savings add up, especially when the gift budget starts calling. For more ideas, check out the full list of energy-saving tips from CPS Energy.
6. Do a Seasonal Closet Swap
Pack away the swimsuits and tank tops, and bring out the sweaters and jackets. Store summer clothes in labeled bins at the top of your closet or under the bed so they're easy to find when warm weather returns, which in San Antonio may be sooner than you think.
7. Refresh Your Outdoor Space
If your home has a private patio or balcony, now is the time to enjoy it again. Swap the summer decor for mums, pumpkins, and a warm throw blanket, and you'll have a cozy spot for your morning coffee or a quiet evening outside. Residents in select homes with a fireplace can look forward to the first chilly night of the season.
8. Enjoy the Community in Cooler Weather
Cooler temperatures make it a great time to get outside and enjoy everything Summer Creek has to offer. Take your pup to our on-site dog park for an extra-long play session, or head to the fitness center to stay on track before the holiday treats arrive. If you work from home, the business center is a convenient spot to change up your routine. Ready to explore beyond the community? Check out our guide to everything within reach of Summer Creek.
